Lavender Lavandula angustifolia

A woody Mediterranean perennial grown for its silvery, aromatic foliage and fragrant purple flower spikes. Lavender thrives on neglect, baking sun, and lean, sharp-draining soil — the one thing it will never forgive is wet feet. Treat it tough and it rewards you for years.

Light

Lavender is a sun-worshipper and needs a minimum of six hours of direct sun a day — eight or more is better. The more sun it gets, the more concentrated its essential oils, the stronger its scent, and the more flowers it throws. Give it your hottest, brightest, most exposed spot: a south-facing bed, the top of a slope, or up against a sun-baked wall. In shade or part-sun it grows lank and floppy, blooms poorly, and becomes far more prone to fungal trouble. Indoors it struggles unless parked in your sunniest window, ideally supplemented with a grow light through winter.

Watering

Once established, lavender is genuinely drought-tolerant and resents fuss. Water deeply but infrequently, letting the soil dry out completely between drinks — in most gardens that means watering only during prolonged dry spells. Young first-year plants need more regular moisture while their roots take hold, then you can taper off. The classic killer is overwatering: soggy roots rot fast and the plant yellows from the crown out. Always err dry. Container lavender needs a touch more attention, but still wait until the top inch or two is bone dry before watering, and never leave the pot standing in a saucer of water.

Soil & potting

Sharp drainage is non-negotiable — lavender would rather be too poor than too wet. Give it a lean, gritty, fast-draining soil; heavy clay is a death sentence unless heavily amended with grit, coarse sand, or pea gravel and planted on a raised mound. It prefers neutral to slightly alkaline ground (pH around 6.7–7.5), so a handful of garden lime helps in acidic soils. Skip rich, fertile beds and avoid mulching with moisture-holding bark right against the stems; a gravel or grit mulch keeps the crown dry and reflects heat. In pots, use a free-draining mix cut generously with perlite or sand and always plant in a container with drainage holes.

Humidity & temperature

Lavender wants dry air and good airflow — humid, stagnant conditions invite fungal disease and root rot. Space plants generously so breezes move between them, and avoid crowding or overhead watering. English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is the cold-hardiest type, surviving winters down to about 10°F (-12°C) and reliable in zones 5–9; Spanish and French lavenders are tenderer and best treated as annuals or potted plants in cold regions. In zones 5–6, a winter mulch of gravel and protection from icy, soggy ground help it through. It tolerates summer heat beautifully provided drainage is good.

Fertilizing

Lavender is one of the few plants that genuinely prefers to be starved — rich soil and heavy feeding produce soft, leggy growth, weak fragrance, and fewer flowers. In most beds it needs no fertilizer at all. If your soil is exceptionally poor, a single light feed of a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength in early spring is plenty; container plants benefit from a similar light spring feed since pots leach nutrients faster. Avoid high-nitrogen formulas and never feed in late summer or fall, which pushes tender growth into winter. When in doubt, do nothing — lean and hungry is exactly how lavender likes to live.

Pruning & maintenance

Annual pruning is what keeps lavender from collapsing into a woody, gappy sprawl. After the first flush of flowers fades, shear the plant back by about a third, cutting into the soft green growth but never into the bare old wood, which rarely re-sprouts. A second light tidy in early spring shapes the plant for the season. For harvest, cut the flower spikes just as the lowest buds open and the color is brightest but most are still closed — that's when fragrance and oil content peak. Snip whole stems in the cool of the morning, then bundle and hang them upside down somewhere dark, dry, and airy to cure.

Propagation

Lavender is easiest from softwood or semi-ripe cuttings rather than seed, which is slow and unpredictable. To start from seed, sow indoors 8–12 weeks before your last frost: surface-sow the fine seed on a sterile, free-draining starting mix, press it in lightly without covering (it needs light to germinate), and keep it warm at around 70°F. Many growers cold-stratify the seed in the fridge for a few weeks first to improve patchy germination. Be patient — sprouting can take two weeks to a month, and seed-grown plants vary and may not bloom until their second year. For faster, true-to-type results, root 3–4 inch cuttings of non-flowering shoots in a gritty mix.

Through the year

Spring

Growth resumes — give a light shaping prune as new green appears, clear away winter mulch from the crown, and feed lightly only if soil is poor.

Summer

Peak bloom. Cut flower spikes for drying as buds open, then shear plants back by a third after the first flush to encourage a second flowering.

Fall

Wind down — stop any feeding, water only in drought, and resist hard pruning, which can leave fresh growth vulnerable to frost.

Winter

Dormant. Keep roots dry and protect tender types or zone-5 plantings with a gravel mulch; in cold regions overwinter potted French and Spanish lavenders indoors in a bright, cool spot.

Companion planting

Lavender pairs well with other lean-soil, sun-loving Mediterranean herbs like rosemary, thyme, sage, and oregano, all of which share its love of dry, sharp-draining ground. It's a magnet for bees and butterflies and is said to deter moths, aphids, and deer, making it a useful edging plant near roses and vegetable beds. Avoid planting it among thirsty, fertile-soil neighbors that demand frequent watering.
