Underwatering
Limp, wrinkled segments over bone-dry soil mean it simply went too long without a drink.
Diagnosis
Underwatering
What's happening
Although Christmas cactus is a succulent, it is a tropical forest cactus, not a desert one, and won't tolerate going completely dry for long. When the mix dries out fully the segments lose their plumpness, wrinkle along their edges, and droop as the plant draws on its own water reserves.
How to fix it
Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom. If the soil is so dry that water runs straight through without soaking in, bottom-water instead: set the pot in a few inches of water for 20–30 minutes, then let it drain fully. The segments should firm up and plump back over a day or two. Going forward, check weekly and water once the top inch is dry — keep it lightly moist in the growing season and a touch drier in winter.
What fixes it
- A long-spout watering can — A long-spout can makes it easy to water deeply and evenly down at the soil.
If that doesn't fix it
This is general guidance based on common symptoms; individual plants vary.
