Too much sun or an iron shortfall

Yellowing on the newest fronds usually means harsh sun or an iron deficiency in the new growth.

Diagnosis

Too much sun or an iron shortfall

What's happening

New fronds bleaching to a pale, washed-out yellow on the window side points to too much direct sun scorching tender growth. Pale, yellow-green new fronds where the veins stay greener than the surrounding tissue instead point to an iron shortfall, which shows up first in the youngest leaves a palm is actively building.

How to fix it

Move the palm out of any harsh direct sun into the bright, indirect light it prefers. If the newest fronds are pale with greener veins, feed with a balanced fertilizer that includes micronutrients, or a palm formula, at half strength through the growing season. New fronds that emerge after the change should come in a healthy green.

What fixes it

  • A balanced liquid fertilizer — A balanced feed with micronutrients greens up pale new fronds and corrects the iron shortfall palms are prone to.

If that doesn't fix it

This is general guidance based on common symptoms; individual plants vary.
