Underwatering

Dry soil and yellowing lower fronds usually mean it went too long between drinks.

Diagnosis

Underwatering

What's happening

Parlor palm likes its soil lightly and evenly moist. If the mix dries out completely the plant can't keep its oldest fronds hydrated, so they yellow and then crisp from the tips, while the soil shrinks and pulls away from the sides of the pot.

How to fix it

Water thoroughly until it runs from the drainage holes. If the soil is so dry the water races straight through without soaking in, bottom-water instead: set the pot in a few inches of water for 20–30 minutes, then let it drain fully. From now on check the soil weekly and water once the top inch begins to dry — aim for steady moisture rather than letting it bake out.

What fixes it

If that doesn't fix it

This is general guidance based on common symptoms; individual plants vary.
