Sun scorch and bleaching

Pale, washed-out leaves with brown patches in direct sun are sunburn, not a feeding problem.

Diagnosis

Sun scorch and bleaching

What's happening

Peace Lily evolved on shaded forest floors and isn't built for harsh, direct sun. Strong rays through a window bleach the leaves to a pale, yellowy green and scorch dry brown patches into the tissue, usually worst on the leaves nearest the glass. The plant may also wilt more often as the sun dries it out fast.

How to fix it

Move the plant back from the window or to a spot with bright, indirect light, or filter the harsh rays with a sheer curtain. Bleached and scorched leaves won't turn green again, so trim badly damaged ones at the base if you want a tidier look — the plant will replace them with healthy growth once it's out of the direct sun. Keep the soil evenly moist as it recovers, since direct sun dries it quickly.

What fixes it

If that doesn't fix it

This is general guidance based on common symptoms; individual plants vary.
