Not enough light

A polka dot plant that stretches and loses its bold spots is almost always under-lit.

Diagnosis

Not enough light

What's happening

The pink, red, or white speckling needs bright light to develop; in dim conditions the plant pumps out plain green to capture what little light there is, and the markings wash out. Low light also makes the stems stretch and lean toward the nearest window, with long bare gaps between leaves — the classic leggy look.

How to fix it

Move the plant to a brighter spot with plenty of bright, indirect light — right beside an east window, or a few feet back from a brighter south or west one, with sheer curtains to soften harsh midday sun. If your space is genuinely dim, a full-spectrum grow light is often the only way to bring the bold coloring back. Pinch the stretched, leggy stems back above a leaf node to encourage bushier, more compact growth as the new leaves come in vivid again.

What fixes it

  • A full-spectrum LED grow light — A full-spectrum grow light restores the bright light a polka dot plant needs to keep its bold spots and stop stretching.

If that doesn't fix it

This is general guidance based on common symptoms; individual plants vary.
