Dust buildup on the leaves

What's happening

The broad, waxy leaves of a rubber plant collect household dust over time. A thick layer scatters incoming light and partly blocks the pores the leaf breathes through, so the plant looks lackluster and photosynthesizes less efficiently even though it's perfectly healthy.

How to fix it

Wipe each leaf gently on both sides with a soft, damp cloth, supporting the leaf with your other hand so you don't crease it. Do this every few weeks to keep the foliage glossy and the pores clear. Skip commercial leaf-shine sprays — they can clog the pores; plain water and a cloth do the job better.
