Natural leaf shedding

Losing a few of the oldest outer leaves while the center stays firm and green is completely normal.

Diagnosis

Natural leaf shedding

What's happening

Air plants continually retire their lowest, oldest leaves as they put out new growth from the center. If only the outermost leaves are browning or loosening and the core feels tight and solid when you gently squeeze it, nothing is wrong — this is routine aging, not rot.

How to fix it

Simply peel away the spent outer leaves with a gentle tug, or trim them off at the base for a tidier look. Carry on with your normal soak-and-dry routine. Just keep an eye on the center: as long as the core stays firm and the inner leaves hold tight, the plant is healthy.

What fixes it

  • Clean pruning snips — Small, clean snips tidy spent outer leaves without tearing the healthy ones.

If that doesn't fix it

This is general guidance based on common symptoms; individual plants vary.
